A Vault Hunter's Guide to Speed Painting Borderlands Miniatures
Hey there, all you badass Vault Hunters!
Today, we have an exciting community project to share with you. Meet Vault Hunter Braeden K., whose passion for Borderlands knows no bounds. Braeden caught the attention of many on the MFC Discord for his dedication to the game and his willingness to share painting tips and techniques for the miniatures in the Borderlands: Mister Torgue’s Arena of Badassery box. He's even created a YouTube video where he discusses some of his favorite techniques for everyone to watch.
When we reached out to Braeden about featuring his work, he was more than happy to share his insights and offered a glimpse into his painting process.
Braeden's Approach to Painting:
Hey, everyone.
I tackled the Borderlands: Mister Torgue’s Arena of Badassery minis following my tried-and-true prep process, as described in the YouTube video I put together. Essentially, what I did was prime all the minis in white, followed by a black wash, and then a white highlight to emphasize the darkest lines on the minis.
Starting with a white primer allowed the minis to easily accept speedpaint and contrast paints, making the process a breeze. By completing all the prep work upfront, I was able to seamlessly transition from one mini to another without waiting for layers to dry. This efficiency allowed me to make significant progress even during busy weeks.
Painting metal with speedpaint can be a lot of fun too. I based all areas I wanted to appear metallic with Army Painter Gravelord Grey, then drybrushed them with GW Stormhost Silver. This recipe has proven to work well for achieving a realistic metal effect on any miniature.
While I greatly admire the incredible detail that some artists achieve through layering and painstakingly detailed work, that approach isn't always my cup of tea. I find that striking the right balance between quality and speed, perfect for tabletop gaming, keeps me motivated and ensures I complete projects in a timely manner. I can't wait to get a campaign of Mister Torgue’s Arena of Badassery going with a fully painted and colorful table!
