The Into the Badlands expansion allows your existing Borderlands® models to break free of the arena to play skirmish battles using Monster Fight Club’s [RE]action System™.
Into the Badlands is a high-octane expansion designed to let you play miniature skirmish battle using your existing collection of Borderlands® models. The Into the Badlands expansion box includes a rulebook, limiters, tokens, and [RE]action System skirmish cards for every existing Borderlands model. (Yes, EVERY existing model, including the ones in this campaign.)
The only other thing you need to start playing is a copy of the original Mister Torgue’s Arena of Badassery™. Every Borderlands® expansion you own can be used to play Into the Badlands too!
Ready to break free from the arena? Let's take a look at how Into the Badlands works!
Scenarios
Every game is driven by a scenario. Most scenarios pit the players’ teams against each other in a confrontation with special objectives. Some scenarios allow players to team up for cooperative objectives but these are the exceptions instead of the norm like in Mister Torgue’s Arena of Badassery™.
The Limiter
The Limiter is used to measure distances during the game instead of counting hexes on map tiles. The battlespace can be created with a variety of scenery as players wish. Building Teams
Players spend points to build their team. The number of points each model costs is listed on the top right corner of the model’s card.
While Mister Torgue’s Arena of Badassery™ only allows you to play as Vault Hunters, when you venture Into the Badlands you can build teams of Vault Hunters, bandits, and even powerful bosses!
Cards with the Fodder keyword represent cheap and expendable models. Fodder only have one Action token so they can be taken out easily, but their low cost allows you to buy multiple models to swarm your opponent.
Player Turns
At any one time, one player will have control of the battlespace. When you take control, you choose to activate a model or Inspire. Fodder only activates when you Inspire (see below).
When you activate your model, you may spend any of their Action tokens, then control passes to your rival player.
When you choose to Inspire Your Team (simply called Inspire), you activate your Fodder and refresh your Action tokens. First, all of your Fodder will take a single action. After your Fodder activate, refresh all of your models’ exhausted Action tokens by flipping them to their ready side. After you finish, your rival takes control.
Basic Actions
A model may exhaust a ready Action token to take any basic action.
Attack Actions
Attacks are one of the most common actions, so let’s take a closer look at the details.
When you attack a model, the target (your rival player) chooses a die for their opposed roll that matches any one of their ready or exhausted Actions tokens. Opposing an action does not exhaust the target’s Action token.
If the target is wounded, that Action token’s color will be reduced to RED. If a RED Action token is used to defend and the attack succeeds, the target is taken out.
When a model is taken out, draw a number of Loot tokens from the Claptrap bag equal to the number of actions the model has. Place the tokens in contact with the model’s base, then remove the model from the battlespace.
[Re]actions
When a model takes a wound from an attack, they may immediately take a [RE]action. [RE]actions use Action tokens like normal actions do, so the model must have a ready Action token. You can use this chance to move into cover or counterattack with some sweet, sweet payback!
Gear Up
Every shiny piece of gear takes up a gear slot. Lucky for you, every model (except those disposable Fodder chumps) starts locked and loaded with the following slots:
• Two weapon slots
• Two mod slots
• One shield slot
• One grenade slot
Models list their starting gear on the bottom of their card. At the start of the game, after players are finished picking their models, they draws cards from the Guns, Ammo Dump, and Zed's Meds decks as listed on their models’ cards. Starting gear can be equipped and placed in their inventory by any of their models: gear does not have to be equipped by the model that drew it.
Models can also pick up more gear during the game by collecting Loot tokens. If a model doesn’t have enough slots to equip the gear, they can store up to three cards in their inventory. When a player Inspires Their Team, they may have their models equip and swap out gear from their inventory. If all of a model’s slots are already full, they may equipped gear with the model’s inventory.
This is only the briefest of overviews of Into the Badlands. The full expansion is jam-packed full of explosive new options for using your existing collection. If you're a Borderlands® fan that loves miniature skirmish games or even a die hard board gamer that's looking for an easily accessible way to try out a new style of game, Into the Badlands is designed for you!
