While Cyberpunk RED Combat Zone puts the spotlight on fast-paced ranged gunfights, The Witcher: No Man’s Land naturally leans hard into brutal, up-close melee. To make swordplay feel deep and cinematic, the [RE]action system introduces several new keywords that add nuance and personality to every clash of steel.
These keywords might appear on non-melee actions as well, but in general they turn simple weapon attacks into meaningful choices that reward clever positioning and timing. Here are the main ones:
Counter gives you a reroll whenever you use that action as a reaction. It makes defensive play feel proactive and dangerous. Land a good Counter, and you might punish an overextended foe before they can recover.
Expose is nasty. When it connects, the target gains a Vulnerable token. While Vulnerable, they cannot use their skills to defend. They have to rely purely on their armor. It is a perfect way to strip away a cocky bandit’s bravado or crack through a heavily armored knight with a Pierce weapon.
Feint is pure trickery. It lets you trigger the action as a reaction, even if the enemy missed you with an attack. Your fighter acts as if they had been wounded, opening up surprise counters and mind games that punish aggressive opponents.
Sweep turns a single attack into a deadly arc. The blow hits every rival in range. Great for clearing out packs of drowners or holding a choke point against multiple foes.
Wild is the high-risk, high-reward option. When making a Yellow or Green attack, you roll an extra red die and take the better result. But if that red die comes up highest, your own fighter gains a Vulnerable token. It perfectly captures the reckless, all-or-nothing style of a cornered Witcher going for the killing blow.
Together, these keywords make melee combat a unique sort of bedlam. Every swing has weight. You are not just rolling dice. You are reading your opponent, setting up feints, exposing weaknesses, and deciding when to go wild or play it safe. It captures that raw, frantic fighting of the Continent, where one well-timed strike separates the living from the dead.
If you love getting stuck in the thick of it, these melee tools combine with established keywords (like Deadly) to make every fight in No Man’s Land tense, unpredictable, and deeply satisfying.
Grab your steel, Witcher. The monsters are getting close.
